Claude Plans at a Glance
Anthropic offers several Claude plans, each with different levels of access to features like Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and the underlying Claude AI models. Here is what each plan includes as of March 2026.
Free Plan ($0/month)
The free plan gives you access to Claude's chat interface with limited usage. You can ask questions, get help with writing, and use Claude for basic tasks. However, you do not get access to Claude Cowork or Claude Code. The free plan is best for trying Claude before committing to a paid subscription.
Pro Plan ($20/month)
The Pro plan is where Claude becomes genuinely useful for professionals. You get significantly higher usage limits, access to Claude's most capable models (including Opus), and full access to both Claude Cowork and Claude Code.
For most non-technical professionals, the Pro plan is the right starting point. It supports light to moderate use — roughly 1 to 3 substantial tasks per day with Cowork, plus regular chat usage throughout the day.
Max Plans ($100 or $200/month)
Anthropic offers two Max tiers for power users. Max 5x costs $100 per month and provides five times the usage of Pro. Max 20x costs $200 per month and provides twenty times the usage.
Both Max plans include the same features as Pro — Cowork, Code, all models — but with substantially higher token allowances. If you are running Cowork tasks regularly throughout the day, or using Claude Code for extended coding sessions, Max is worth considering.
The key difference between Pro and Max is not features — it is capacity. Both plans unlock the same tools. Max just lets you use them more.
Team Plan ($25–30/user/month)
The Team plan is designed for organisations with multiple users. Each team member gets Cowork access. Claude Code access requires premium developer seats at approximately $150 per month per seat.
Team plans add administrative features: centralised billing, shared conversation history, team-wide settings, and priority support. If you are rolling out Claude across a department or company, this is the plan to evaluate.
Enterprise Plan (Custom Pricing)
Enterprise plans are negotiated directly with Anthropic and include everything in Team plus enterprise-grade security, compliance features, custom data retention policies, SSO integration, and dedicated support.
How Tokens Work
All Claude plans use a token-based system. Every message you send and every response Claude generates consumes tokens. Longer conversations, complex tasks, and multi-step agent operations use more tokens.
Important for Cowork and Code users: both tools consume tokens significantly faster than regular chat. A single Cowork task might trigger dozens of behind-the-scenes operations — reading files, taking screenshots, running code, browsing the web. Each of those steps uses tokens. Similarly, Claude Code sessions that involve reading large codebases or making extensive edits can burn through tokens quickly.
If you find yourself hitting usage limits regularly on Pro, upgrading to Max is more cost-effective than rationing your usage.
Which Plan Should You Choose?
Just exploring — Start with Free. No commitment, and you can test Claude's chat capabilities.
Individual professional — Start with Pro. It unlocks Cowork and Code, which is where the real value begins. Upgrade to Max if you hit limits.
Daily power user — Go straight to Max 5x. If you are using Cowork or Code multiple times per day, Pro's limits will feel restrictive quickly.
Heavy professional use — Max 20x. If Claude is a core part of your daily workflow, this tier gives you the headroom to use it without watching your token count.
Teams — Team plan. Centralised management and shared access make it practical for organisations.
